Johnny Lewis out for majority of season with torn ACL and will focus on rider coaching while rehabbing kneeFlat tracker and supermoto racer was significantly improving his results this year Coatesville, Penn. (June 10, 2009) – Scott Powersports/DRD’s Johnny Lewis was showing many flashes of brilliant riding during the first three rounds of the AMA Pro Flat Track Championship and round three of the XTRM AMA Pro Supermoto Championship. Now he will be on the sidelines to recover from a torn ACL in his knee after suffering a crash at the Supermoto race in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 31. “It’s a huge let down after doing well at Daytona and then getting sixth at the Springfield TT,” said Lewis who was focused on the AMA Pro Flat Track Singles Championship. “Unfortunately in racing these things happen and we have to deal with them. This injury is very common, and I am not alone with Ryan Villopoto and Mike Alessi getting knocked out of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship with knee injuries. Since I’m laid up for a few months, I’ll be working with up-and-coming flat track racers to provide coaching and sponsorship marketing through my company Evolve Moto.” Lewis comments on how the injury occurred. “I was at the XTRM AMA Pro Supermoto Championship race at South Point Casino. I was excited to be back racing Supermoto thanks to Factory Pro Racing. I got second in the heat race on the KTM 560SMR and went into the Unlimited Class main with a shot of at least a podium finish. In the main, I was battling with Kurt Nicoll (eventual winner). Then I slid out in one of the dirt turns and had to be hauled off the track. I knew right away that my knee was messed up. When I saw my doctor at home, it was diagnosed as a torn ACL. I will be out for a few months and not clear yet when we’ll be back racing.” This spring Lewis was looking into developing a coaching program for amateur and pro-am flat track racers, working with them when he had non-race weekends. Now with more time while he recovers, Lewis will be coaching riders and providing sponsorship marketing services full-time through his company Evolve Moto that he launched last year. Very soon, Lewis will announce his first rider. Lewis adds this about his sponsors, “The success racing this year was only possible with the support of my sponsors. Mike Scott of Scott Powersports really stepped up this season to help me with bike prep and a mechanic at the races. Since last year, Doug Dubach and his Dubach Racing Development (DRD) have been extremely supportive and stepped into flat track for the first time with me. Schaefer’s Harley-Davidson has been a sponsor for a number of years and they are just a great bunch of people. Troy Lee Designs, Utopia Optics, Alpinestars, Arai Helmets, Pit Posse, Outlaw Racing Products, Pro Billet/Fastway, Motion Pro and Loud Mouth MX all really made racing possible at this level. I will come back with their continued support and hope to keep moving up in the flat track ranks.” About Johnny Lewis Professional athlete Johnny Lewis of Coatesville, Penn. has competed in the AMA Pro Supermoto Championship for the past three years becoming the youngest racer to win in the Unlimited Class.
